Unicorn Balls – Easy Crochet Unicorn Pattern (free!) with Paper Legs

Unicorn Ball Crochet Pattern

Supplies

For this project, you will need:

This little 2-inch pattern is so easy and so much fun you can’t just make one. You’ll have tons of unicorn friends before you know it. Our basic shape is a ball with a flat bottom. It’s similar to my cupcake crochet pattern. To push this design over the edge in cuteness I made some little legs with rolled-up paper (like paper beads).

  • worsted weight yarn
  • 3.5mm crochet hook (or similar size)
  • yarn needle
  • safety eyes, or black embroidery thread (or lightweight yarn)
  • fiberfill stuffing (or a pillow)

Crochet Glossary

Magic Ring. Here’s a trick if you haven’t gotten the magic ring yet.
SC – single crochet
DC – double crochet
INC – increase. In this pattern, single crochet two times in the same stitch
DEC – decrease. In this pattern, pull up a loop, pull up a loop in the next stitch, and crochet through all 3 loops

HEAD

Magic Ring
1- SC 6 in the ring
2- INC in each (12)
3- * SC. INC.* repeat (18)
4- * SC next 2. INC. * (24)
Round 5-12 SC in each
13- START TO CLOSE OFF – Work in BACK LOOPS so fabric folds toward the middle (makes a bottom edge)
SC 2. DEC.* repeat
Add safety eyes now and stuff

Unicorn Ball Crochet Pattern Step 1

14- * SC next 2. DEC.*
15- * SC. DEC. * Bind off
16- Sew closed by picking up the front loops around the circle. Pull closed, knot and hide tail.

EARS

Slip Knot
Chain 3
In the 2nd chain from the hook, SC 2 back.
Bind off and leave extra for sewing.

04 5in Unicorn Ears

Sew the ears onto the head and secure.
Pull the extra yarn out through the back end where a tail would be.

HORN

Now we’re going to use felt to make a horn.
Cut your felt into (approximately) this shape. It doesn’t have to be perfect. We’ll be trimming a lot of this anyway.

Start rolling, holding the tip. You may have to roll and twist a few times before the fabric wants to keep its shape.
08 5in Unicorn Make Horn
Sew or glue a dab to keep it rolled. Trim the bottom to size. Sew or glue on to your doll’s head.

MOUTH

Cut a piece of felt in a rectangular shape with round edges.
Hold the felt piece in place. Don’t glue yet. (I tried gluing the felt first and it was very hard to sew the smile)
Make one loose stitch for the mouth with black thread or floss. Pull the stitch down into the shape of a smile.
Now you can glue the felt rectangle down if you so choose.

HAIR

I have a lot of doll hair lying around here so I snipped a few pieces and hot-glued them on. You could use yarn for hair too.

Legs

To finish off this cute, I made him some legs to stand on. This was as simple as finding some construction paper in the color I liked and rolling it up using some school glue to keep it rolled. You can see here that I used 2 different colored papers. Blue for the legs and then added to that in purple for the hooves. It was easy to assemble. Just stick the legs into the crochet holes. You can glue them with hot glue to keep them in place if you choose.

So here you have it. A finished, simple, easy crochet Unicorn. It came together quickly!
